Video Games

Gaming is a passion for millions of people around the world. As technology advances, video games become more complex and socially engaging. Unfortunately, video games have long been viewed as a waste of time, an obsession, and an addiction, leading to negative perceptions. These concerns about problematic gaming predate the internet but have only grown in the digital age. Video games have often been linked to violence and caused moral panic. However, recent research has shown that video games have unique benefits despite the potential harm of excessive gameplay.

Although the field of problematic video gaming research is still emerging, there are many sensationalist claims about the hobby.

To name a few, research and society as a whole has viewed gamers as:

  • Antisocial and addicted

  • High levels or tendencies towards aggression and violence with low emotional regulation

  • Difficulties in attention

  • Having severe social dynamic difficulties

Some critical factors should be considered in the analyses carried out so far. One of the most important of these is a need for more understanding of the culture surrounding video games, including their online communities, communication dynamics, and the significant undervaluation of the positive effects of video gaming on individuals and communities.

In 2020, the WHO (World Health Organization) included a diagnosis of Gaming Disorder in the ICD-11 (International Classification of Diseases). However, the APA (American Psychiatric Association) and the DSM-V TR (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition, text revised) believe that further research is needed to classify Internet Gaming Disorder as a specific condition.

Despite the numerous benefits of gaming as a hobby, some individuals have found themselves consumed by their favourite games, leading to problematic behaviours and negative impacts on their lives. Excessive gaming can lead to reduced academic performance, difficulties at work, problems in relationships, and avoidance of social interactions with friends and family. Therefore, it's essential to maintain a healthy balance between gaming and other aspects of life.

If you or someone you care about is struggling with excessive video gaming that impacts their quality of life, relationships, and other personal or professional areas, it may be time to seek help. My practice aims to identify the root causes of excessive gaming rather than eliminating gaming or technology. My goal is to bring about a more balanced and fulfilling life where individuals can enjoy gaming as a hobby while fulfilling their personal and professional obligations.
