Geek Therapy
Currently, I am the only Canadian Psychologist who is a Certified Geek Therapist.
But what is Geek Therapy and a Geek Therapist?
As a lifelong geek, I have always been fascinated by the power of fictional characters to inspire and influence our lives. While this niche was pretty isolated as no other therapists in the area really understood the concept of geekdom, or at times saw the interests through a negative lens. I was pretty surprised to see that my friends at Geek Therapeutics designed a certification program that does such a thing. Geek Therapy merges many evidence-based therapeutic approaches and uses them with a pop culture flair.
Geek Therapy uses paradigms of thought, intellectual curiosities and specialised interests outside of "normal" social conformity.
Using characters as allegories, metaphors, and frameworks can be a powerful tool in therapy. Additionally, gamification can be utilised to establish goals and achieve desired outcomes. Geek therapy incorporates geeky modalities such as role-playing, fantasy, fandoms, and personal identities to develop connections, encourage interaction, demonstrate analogous real-life experiences, and facilitate personal and intrinsic growth. The power of using characters as allegories, metaphors, and frameworks in therapy is immense. By employing gamification to establish goals and achieve desired outcomes, we can unlock the potential for personal and intrinsic growth. Geek therapy offers an inspiring approach by incorporating geeky modalities such as role-playing, fantasy, fandoms, and personal identities. These establish a connection, encourage interaction, and demonstrate analogous real-life experiences.
Geek culture relies heavily on pop culture references that create a shared language, connecting enthusiasts with iconic quotes, symbols, and memes. These references act as cultural currency, enabling communication and fostering a sense of belonging in the community.
Exploring narratives within geek culture can offer a unique opportunity for personal growth and reflection. By examining the journeys of favourite characters or creating one's own narratives through creative writing, one can gain a better perspective on their own identity. This form of narrative therapy can contribute to greater self-awareness, purpose, and autonomy, all of which are crucial components of overall well-being.
Narratives within the geek community often explore intricate moral and ethical dilemmas, promoting introspection regarding beliefs and values. These stories establish a moral identity, stimulating contemplation of justice, loyalty, and personal responsibility.
Geek culture uses narratives as a powerful tool for identity formation. These stories provide a shared mythology that binds the community and offers individuals a framework to construct their identities. These narratives' themes, struggles, and triumphs resonate deeply with personal experiences, fostering a sense of empowerment and belonging. The diverse range of stories allows for a broad spectrum of identity expressions, while the communal engagement within the geek culture strengthens the collective bond. Narrative and identity formation are integral components of the vibrant and inclusive world of geekdom, making it a unique and inspiring community.
Unfortunately, it is common for individuals in the geek community to be judged and belittled for their harmless personal preferences. Using a Geek Therapy approach provides a safe and welcoming environment where your interests won’t be ridiculed or belittled. Although I may not be familiar with every facet of geek culture, I am eager to learn about your particular fandom and embark on this journey with you.
